Saying ‘thanks’ and ‘farewell’ after two very positive years

By Delia Cannings, former Chair of the British Cleaning Council (BCC). (This column first appeared in Tomorrow’s Cleaning magazine).

Earlier this month, I stepped down after two years as Chair of the British Cleaning Council.

What an enjoyable whirlwind it has been! I have the satisfaction of looking back on some significant progress for the BCC and the industry on several fronts, during my time in office.

The launch of the Level 2 Cleaning Hygiene Operative Apprenticeship on 1 January last year was a significant event for our industry, enabling millions of pounds of industry funds to be reinvested in training staff.

In a similar way, the launch of the UK Cleaning Career Development Zone (www.ukcleaning.org.uk) is another important achievement, bringing together information about industry training and development courses into one place for the first time, where guidance advice and opportunities can be easily accessed online.

Both these strategic initiatives answer an essential need for the sector, boosting the drive towards professionalism and supporting staff recruitment.

During my tenure, the development of the BCC image gallery to support positivity and professionalism when using cleaning related images has been welcomed and accessed by many. The annual industry report has been modernised to include images which support the new cleaning world.

Gaining recognition for the sector and its staff has been a significant strand of the BCC’s work for many years. Our voice at government level is very clear and is building momentum.

I remain extremely grateful to my colleague and Immediate Past President of the BCC Jim Melvin, who leads on this theme of work. Jim has a unique style and approach and I have valued his support beyond words.

I was delighted to hear him report recently that the current Government has been more welcoming towards our lobbying campaign.

In a recent letter, the Parliamentary Secretary for the Cabinet Office assured us that the Embedding Effective Hygiene for a Resilient UK report, which we have been championing since 2022, was being considered by the Government.

The letter also said that the Government recognised the ‘vital role that the cleaning and hygiene sector plays in ensuring public health and mitigating key risks, both in its routine work and during public health emergencies’, which feels like a real breakthrough.

During this period, the Manchester and London Cleaning Shows – which the BCC co-produces – have gone from strength to strength, suggesting that the industry has finally bounced back from the Covid years.

This view is further reinforced by our latest research report, which shows that the value of the cleaning, hygiene and waste industry has reached a record-breaking figure of nearly £66.9bn, while employment increased to 1.49m.

This equates to approximately five percent of the UK workforce, maintaining the industry as a top ten employer in the UK.

There are other successes to highlight, such as our work with the Clean Hospitals initiative and the launch of the redesigned BCC website.

I am honoured to have served during such a positive and encouraging period.

Thank you again to the many colleagues who have supported myself and the BCC over the last two years.

I wish to acknowledge the absolutely sterling work undertaken by Simon Hollingbery, the BCC secretary, and Jason Grimsley, our PR Manager, without whom our success would not have been possible.

Also, I must mention Ronnie, my wonderful husband, who has supported me in every way possible enabling this part of my journey and always believing in me.

Finally, I extend a personal welcome to the next BCC Chair David Garcia, a man of phenomenal integrity and colossal industry experience

Why domestic cleaning is thriving

By Katie Davies, Domestic Cleaning Alliance (DCA) member. (This column first appeared in Cleaning and Maintenance online).

Understanding the Growth and Success of the Industry

In recent years, the domestic cleaning industry has witnessed significant growth and success, driven by a variety of factors that have combined to create an increasing demand for professional cleaning services. This phenomenon can be attributed to a combination of societal changes, economic trends, and evolving consumer preferences. Below, we delve into the key reasons why domestic cleaning is doing well.

Busy Lifestyles and Time Constraints

One of the primary reasons for the rise in demand for domestic cleaning services is the increasingly busy lifestyles of modern-day individuals. With hectic work schedules, long commuting hours, and numerous personal commitments, many people find it challenging to devote time to household chores. As a result, they are turning to professional cleaning services to help maintain a clean and organised living environment.

Dual-Income Households

The prevalence of dual-income households has also contributed significantly to the growth of the domestic cleaning industry. As both partners in a household are often engaged in full-time employment, the time available for domestic tasks is greatly reduced. Hiring professional cleaners allows these households to manage their time more effectively and focus on their careers and personal lives without the added burden of cleaning.

Increased Awareness of Hygiene and Cleanliness

The heightened awareness of hygiene and cleanliness, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, has further fuelled the demand for domestic cleaning services. People are now more conscious of the importance of maintaining a clean and sanitised home environment to prevent the spread of illnesses and ensure the well-being of their families. This awareness has led to a greater willingness to invest in professional cleaning services that guarantee thorough and effective cleaning.

Health and Safety Concerns

Concerns about health and safety have also played a crucial role in the growing popularity of domestic cleaning services. Professional cleaning companies use specialised equipment and products that are designed to eliminate germs, bacteria, and allergens more effectively than regular household cleaning methods. This ensures a higher level of cleanliness and provides peace of mind to homeowners, knowing that their living spaces are being cleaned to the highest standards.

Rise of Remote Work

The rise of remote work and home-based businesses has had a significant impact on the domestic cleaning industry. As more people spend extended periods of time at home, the need for a clean and organised living and working environment has become more pronounced. Remote workers and entrepreneurs often require their homes to be tidy and clutter-free to maintain productivity and mental well-being, leading them to seek professional cleaning services.

Increased Disposable Income

Another factor contributing to the success of the domestic cleaning industry is the increase in disposable income among many households. As people have more financial resources at their disposal, they are more likely to allocate funds towards services that enhance their quality of life. Professional cleaning services are seen as a valuable investment that saves time and effort, allowing individuals to enjoy a cleaner and more comfortable home without the stress of doing it themselves.

Technological Advancements

Technological advancements have also played a pivotal role in the growth of the domestic cleaning industry. The development of innovative cleaning equipment and eco-friendly cleaning products has made professional cleaning more efficient and effective. Additionally, the rise of digital platforms and apps that connect consumers with cleaning service providers has made it easier than ever to book and manage cleaning appointments, further driving the demand for these services.

Customized Cleaning Solutions

The ability to offer customized cleaning solutions tailored to the specific needs and preferences of clients has set professional cleaning services apart from traditional cleaning methods. Many cleaning companies provide flexible packages that allow clients to choose the frequency and type of cleaning services they require. This level of customization ensures that clients receive personalized care and attention, leading to higher satisfaction and repeat business.

Environmental Consciousness

With the growing awareness of environmental issues, many consumers are seeking eco-friendly cleaning options that minimize the impact on the planet. Professional cleaning companies have responded to this demand by offering green cleaning services that use non-toxic, biodegradable, and sustainable products. This aligns with the values of environmentally conscious consumers and further boosts the appeal of professional cleaning services.

Marketing and Brand Trust

Effective marketing strategies and the establishment of strong brand trust have also contributed to the success of the domestic cleaning industry. Professional cleaning companies invest in marketing campaigns that highlight the benefits of their services, emphasizing convenience, quality, and reliability. Positive reviews, referrals, and word-of-mouth recommendations from satisfied clients build brand trust and attract new customers.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the thriving domestic cleaning industry can be attributed to a combination of busy lifestyles, increased awareness of hygiene, the rise of remote work, higher disposable incomes, technological advancements, customized cleaning solutions, and environmental consciousness. As these factors continue to shape consumer behaviour and preferences, the demand for professional domestic cleaning services is expected to remain strong, ensuring the continued growth and success of the industry.
